How to secure your home in 5 easy steps

With burglaries soaring by more than a third when the clocks go back, it’s not a coincidence that National Home Security Month falls within the same month. Symbolizing change and the preservation of life, Autumn is the ideal time of year to review home security and action any important changes before winter sets in.

With this in mind, the T&K team invite you to take a peek at these 5 easy steps to secure your home.

Timber door with multipoint locking

1. Secure your door

Did you know that 28% of UK adults take absolutely no security precautions at home? With 74% of intruders literally walking through the front door, with secure doors and windows being the third most important feature for homebuyers, it seems absurd that securing front and back doors aren’t a priority to all Northamptonshire homeowners. From upgrading your door locking hardware to completely replacing and upgrading your entrance doors, you can trust in T&K to deliver some of the most stylish, intruder-resistant doors around.

Kubu Smart door lock

2. A smart home is a secure home

5% of burglaries take place due to an unlocked door, so it’s hardly surprising that a third of adults now have a smart doorbell fitted; allowing homeowners to literally keep an eye on their home from anywhere in the world. At some point in our lives, we’ve all wondered if we’ve locked our door but there’s been no way to check on this without physically going back to check. Until now. The Kubu smart lock prevents you from ever leaving your home unlocked again, allowing you to monitor the status of your doors in real-time from the user-friendly Kubu smartphone app.

Proactively avoiding any potential issues surrounding lockable smart locks, there’s no need to worry about getting locked out with Kubu equipped doors either, as the traditional method of locking your front door with a key remains. Get in touch to learn more.

3. Upgrade your glazing

Other than the thermal benefits, upgrading single glazing to double glazing increases home security by almost 100%; after all, two panes of glass make a much better defence than one. Even better, triple glazed window frames are often reinforced to accommodate the extra pane of glass. Reinforced and laminated glass is also a viable option to consider.

Many of the windows we install feature high-security multi-point locking systems and the enviable Secured by Design certification. It’s also crucial to note that many older windows feature external beading, which is widely accepted as less secure than the internally beaded windows of today. The secure T&K bead system notably increases the security of Northamptonshire homes.

4. Out of sight, out of mind

It may seem simple, but homes are still being broken into due to unsuitable window coverings. Avoid thin voiles and opt for thick, opaque curtains or roller blinds. Automated curtains or contemporary integrated blinds (fitted in-between the panes of double glazing) may appeal more to smart home enthusiasts.
