Energy Cap Explained

Every three months, Ofgem reviews energy supplier charges and sets a level for how much they can charge for each unit of energy. This ‘energy cap’ was put in place to prevent homeowners on variable tariffs from receiving ridiculously high bills from energy providers.

It is calculated from wholesale energy charges that the suppliers themselves pay. Therefore, an increase in the energy cap can be traced back to the wholesale cost of gas in recent months. Global conflicts like the events in the Middle East have impacted this, so there are lots of factors at play here which influence the energy cap and, therefore, your monthly bills.

Despite how it sounds, the energy cap doesn’t actually cap how much you might have to pay. Put simply, the more you use, the more you pay. It is the rates themselves that are capped.

Plan for the Future

With the rise in capped energy prices for this quarter, who knows if this will increase again in future? As mentioned above, socio-political factors affect the cost of energy, and these then influence how much you pay. While the conflict in the Middle East is enough to worry about as it is, on top of that, it’s going to make you question whether you turn your heating on or not.

To avoid too much anxiety around energy prices and paying your bills, you need to future-proof your home. You can’t do anything about external factors like war and base energy costs, but you can ensure that your windows, doors and living spaces are thermally efficient.

Double or triple glazed windows are much more energy efficient and therefore cost-effective in the long run than single glazed windows – or even older profiles that have seen better days. Now is the right time to invest in the future of your home with T&K.
